How to comprehensively develop and make use of coal gangue, in other words, turn waste into wealth, has become an important subject researched in coal industry in recent years.
Coal gangue is the solid waste discharged during coal mining and washing process. It is a compound of carbon, clay and sandy shale, of low calorific value. Accumulating on the ground, the coal gangue not only covers a large area, but also is liable to spontaneous combustion, polluting the air or causing fire. Now, the coal gangue is mainly used as raw material in coal gangue cement production, lightweight aggregate for concrete and building materials in construction. Moreover, it can also be used for coal recycling, mixed burning with coal for power generation, producing crystalline aluminum chloride, sodium silicate and other chemical products as well as extracting precious rare metal, and as fertilizer.
Over the years, the research on the comprehensive utilization of coal gangue has been rapidly developed. The major technique is to break the coal gangue into proper granularity, and then apply to related fields. Coal gangue has a wide range of applications, as raw materials for brickmaking, wall materials and subgrade materials and to make chemical products, handicrafts, etc., but the most part is reprocessed to used in power plants.
